The first event of the MIAC track & field championships is in the books, as the women's heptathlon competition concluded early Friday afternoon.
Jule Muegge and
Makayla Skluzacek placed in the top ten in the two-day, seven-event competition. Both ended the day with new personal bests in the 800 meter run to put an exclamation point on their first ever heptathlon competition.
Muegge ended the competition in ninth place with a score of 3088. She started the day with a jump of 4.08m in the long jump, and then had a huge personal best in the javelin throw. Muegge added over four meters to her PR, throwing 19.77m to ad 285 points to her score. She then turned in another huge PR in the 800m run, dropping 10 seconds from her time. Her run of 2:40.05 earned her 572 points, her highest scoring event of the meet.
Skluzacek earned a total of 2951 points over the two day event, finishing in 10th place overall. She got her day off to a great start with a big PR in the long jump, leaping 4.50m. Skluzacek followed that up with a strong throw of 15.86m in the javelin. She then ended the day in similar fashion to Muegge, as the two worked together in the 800m run, with Skluzacek finishing just ahead of Muegge in 2:38.22. The time was a new PR by over 11 seconds.
Although Muegge and Skluzacek ended the event just out of the scoring places, as the only two freshmen in the event, they demonstrated their ability to hang with the best in the MIAC and showed great promise for their continued development in the heptathlon over the next few seasons. Both added their names to the top-ten lists at St. Kate's. Muegge now is #5 on the heptathlon list. Skluzacek is #7 in the heptathlon, in addition to adding her name to #9 all-time in the high jump.
Skluzacek and Muegge will be joined by the rest of their teammates next weekend in Concordia for the MIAC Championships.
