First year student-athletes
Makayla Skluzacek and
Jule Muegge successful navigated day one of the MIAC Heptathlon Championships. Muegge set personal bests in three of the four events, and finds herself in seventh place with 1905 points
Skluzacek's day was highlighted by a new personal best in the high jump. Her day one total of 1,718 points has her sitting in 10th place.
For those not familiar with the event, the MIAC Hepthalon is the first part of the MIAC Outdoor track and field championships. With four events (100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, and 200m dash) on day one and another three events (Long Jump, Javelin, and 800 meter run) on day two, athletes compete against each other and the clock to pick up points in each event. Those individual event totals are then tallied to determine final place standings.
Muegge got her day off to a strong start with a sixth place finish, and a new personal best, of 17.60 in the 100 hurdles. She followed that up with another sixth place finish in the high jump. Muegge's jump of 1.44m (4-8.75) was just off her season best. She carried that momentum into a new personal best in the shot put (7.01meters) and a season best in the 200 meter dash (29.97).
Skluzacek was not as fortunate as her teammate in the first event. She was forced to recover from a mid-race stumble that found her in last place after the first event. Demonstrating her tanacity and competive spirit, Skluzacek quickly responded with a third place finish, and new personal best, in the high jump (1.50m, 4-11). She followed that up with the second best shot put performance of her young career (7.67 meters) and a new best, and sixth place finish, in the 200 meter dash (28.10).
Concordia's Kaari Jensen, who is currently ranked #2 in the country in the Heptathlon, leads after day one with a total of 2819 points.
Action resumes at Carleton College Friday May 4th at Noon.
