Like their swimming and diving classmates competing across the street, the St. Kate’s track and field team set two school records while competing at the University of Minnesota.
Running a strong and steady race, junior Kayla Engel lowered the school record she set last year in the 800 meter run. Engel finished second in her heat with a time of 2:18.90. After starting in fourth place, Engel steadily moved up to the shoulder of the leader and just missed winning her heat in a sprint finish down the stretch.
Joining Engel on the record board during the day was senior Greta Sieve. Sieve’s seventh individual school record came in the mile, but it was anything but lucky number seven for Sieve. After being on national qualifying pace early, a third of the way into the race Sieve was tripped up in a pile up of runners and was knocked to the track. She got up and raced to rejoin the field moving from last place all the way up to fourth place in the heat. Sieve finished just a shade under Jody Brinkman’s record with a time of 5:10.82.
Sam Levercom continued her strong sophomore season. She recorded personal bests in both the 60 (8.29) and the 200 (27.58) meter dashes. Levercom just missed qualifying for finals in the 60, but was victories in her heat of the 200.
The Wildcats ended the meet with a strong race and another season best. Kayla Engel joined with Kim Engel, Amanda Manship and Erin Coughlin in the 4 x 400 meter relay. The quartet’s time of 4:03.35 now ranks second in the MIAC, and was just off the school record set last season.
The Wildcats have one final tune-up before the MIAC Indoor Championships on Friday February 26th at St. Olaf.
