ST. PAUL, MINN. – When it's mattered the most, the St. Catherine University basketball team has come up with some of its biggest games of the season. On Wednesday, the Wildcats came up with another big-time Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win, this time over the St. Olaf College Oles. Thanks to a 62-45 victory over St. Olaf Wednesday evening, St. Kate's continued its rise up the conference standings, moving into seventh place with three games remaining on the schedule.
It took the Wildcats a while to get going offensively, as they lead the Oles 13-12 at the end of the first quarter. In fact, St. Olaf had the upper hand early in the second, as it jumped ahead 16-13 on a jumper by Samantha Tisa. While St. Kate's was able to answer the early basket, the Oles quickly regained the lead with another layup, this time by Keegan Mulvihill. Again, the Wildcats were able to even the score and eventually took a 20-18 lead with two free throws by senior Meg Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo).
After Clark's free throws, St. Kate's went on a 6-3 scoring run, ending the quarter with a 30-24 lead over St. Olaf. Coming out of halftime, the Wildcats continued to score, as monster 20-point third quarter propelled them to a 50-36 lead. Brooke Torvik (Rice, Minn. / Sauk Rapids-Rice) played a huge roll in the Wildcats third quarter, as she missed just one shot en route to a career high eight-points. Torvik was also a force to be reckoned with defensively, as she tallied three steals and had a hand in five St. Olaf turnovers.
Danica Cambrice (Minneapolis, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) was also a force in her own right, as she scored a team-leading 16 points, including nine in the second half. Clark added 14 points, scoring an even seven in both half, while Jackie Radford (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham-Hall) led the team with six rebounds in the game.
The Wildcats continued to dominate defensively in the fourth and final quarter, holding the Oles to just nine total points in the final 10 minutes of play. St. Kate's also scored 12 points on its own in the final quarter, propelling the team to its 62-45 victory over St. Olaf.
With the win, the Wildcats overall record improves to 10-12 and they have a 6-9 record in MIAC play. St. Kate's will return to the court on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip off against Hamline University. The Wildcats will honor Clark and fellow senior Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins) in one of the final home games of their careers with St. Kate's.
