MIAC Release
BLOOMINGTON, MINN. – The St. Catherine University basketball team once again made history in 2017-18. The Wildcats made the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs for the second consecutive season and saw multiple student-athletes etch their name in the record books. On Wednesday, St. Kate's was rewarded for its historic year, as five Wildcats earned honors from the conference office, including sophomore forward
Danica Cambrice (Minneapolis, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran), who was voted All-MIAC for the first time in her career.
Joining Cambrice was fellow sophomore
Jackie Radford (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) and seniors
Meg Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) and
Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins), who were all members of the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention team, also released Wednesday afternoon.
Ashley Fosness (Britton, S.D. / Britton-Hecla) was a member of the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team.
Despite missing a month of the season, Cambrice garnered her first All-MIAC honor after a breakout season for St. Kate's. Cambrice did nothing but dominate for the Wildcats, as she scored in double-digits 15 of the 16 games she played for St. Kate's this season and became the first player in program history to record three 30+ point performances in a single season. She led the team in every offensive category, including points (308), points per game (19.3) and field goal percentage (57.3) at the end of the season. She was second in the MIAC in both points per game (19.3) and field goal percentage (57.3) during the season, ranking behind conference Player-of-the-Year Hannah Spaulding, and ranked in the top-10 in rebounds per game (6.5; No. 8), steals (41; No. 10) and ranked No. 11 in blocked shots (19).
What may be more impressive is Cambrice's numbers against MIAC opponents. The sophomore averaged a league-leading 20.6 points per game against conference foes thanks to a 57.2 shooting percentage from the floor. All three of her 30 point performances occurred against MIAC opponents as well, two of which helped clinch the Wildcats spot in the conference tournament. Cambrice was also voted the MIAC Women's Basketball Athlete-of-the-Week twice during the 2017-18 season and was St. Kate's Fleur-de-lis Award winner twice during the year as well.
Like Cambrice, Radford also had a breakout year in 2017-18. Radford was one of the few constants for the Wildcats in a season filled with injuries and changes, as she was the lone player to start all 26 games for St. Kate's during the season. As a sophomore, Radford led the team in minutes played (797) and minutes per game average (30.7) and also ranked in the top-10 in the MIAC in both categories.
However, Radford didn't earn All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors for her stability. Radford dominated on the boards for the Wildcats and was consistently one of the top rebounders in the conference in 2017-18. At the end of the season, Radford ranked sixth in the conference in overall rebounds per game average (7.0) and total rebounds (183), was fourth in offensive rebounds (71) and seventh in defensive rebounds (112). She was even more dominant against conference opponents, as she ranked second in offensive rebounds (53), sixth in total rebounds (126) and rebounds per game (7.0) and seventh in defensive rebounds (73) versus MIAC foes. Radford also finished the season ranked ninth in steals (42) and No. 19 in assists (51).
Clark and Garcia closed out their impressive careers at St. Kate's with All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors. Clark, like Radford, was a staple in the Wildcats line up, as she started 25 of 26 games and played 778 total minutes. She led the team in assists (56) and was No. 15 in the MIAC In the exact same category. Clark also ranked in the top-5 on the team in points (204) and points per game (7.8) and was, perhaps surprisingly, one of St. Kate's top rebounders in 2017-18. As a guard, Clark tallied 104 rebounds as a senior, averaged 4.0 per game, and ranked No. 13 in the MIAC in offensive rebounds (49) rebounds.
Garcia was a huge part of the Wildcat offense during her senior year with St. Kate's. Garcia was second on the team in points per game (11.5) during the season and was the team's top offensive scorer after it lost Cambrice and
Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) to injury. Garcia scored a career-high 32 points in a game against Hamline in early January, which ranks third all-time in single-game scoring in program history. In her career, Garcia scored 478 total points, pulled in 190 rebounds and tallied 58 assists and 45 steals for St. Kate's.
Fosness was the final Wildcat honored by the MIAC Wednesday afternoon, as she was St. Kate's representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team. Members of the team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Fosness did all of this and more in her first season with St. Kate's, as she appeared in 21 games and made 16 starts. She scored a career-high 12 points twice during the regular season and ended the year with 89 total points and 63 rebounds.
