Each Wednesday throughout the summer, the St. Catherine University athletics department will countdown the top Wildcat victories from the last year in the Top 10 Victories of 2015-16.
Under the direction of head coach
Corey Phelps, the St. Catherine University volleyball program has developed into a contender in the ultracompetitive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). This past season was the most competitive in recent history, highlighted by the Wildcats huge five-set upset over the No. 22 ranked College of Saint Benedict.
Competing in what is considered one of the top volleyball conference's in Division III, St. Kate's was in every game against the top teams in the MIAC, but hadn't found a way to finish for the victory. That all changed when the Wildcats upset the No. 22 ranked Blazers in five sets (25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 15-25, 15-13) in St. Joseph, Minnesota on October 10.
St. Kate's took the opening set 25-19 after winning four of the first five points to jump to a 4-1 lead. Then in the second set, the Wildcats opened with a 5-0 run and held the potent Saint Ben's offense at bay to take a 2-0 lead.
The Blazers proved why they were one of the top teams in the nation in the third and fourth sets, beating the Wildcats by scores of 25-14 and 25-15 to tie the match at 2-2. In the decisive fifth set, it looked like history was going to repeat itself, as Saint Ben's jumped to a 3-0 lead over St. Kate's. Down 5-2 just seven points in, the Wildcat resilience took over, and the team took a 7-6 lead, its first of the fifth set. The Blazers weren't going down without a fight, and the decisive set to 15 was tied at 9-9 and 13-13.
St Kate's claimed the final two points of the match to pull off the dramatic and thrilling upset on the road. The Wildcats win over the Blazers was the first for the program since the 1986 MIAC Tournament and the team's second conference win of 2015.
