Game Recap: Basketball |

Northwestern pulls away in fourth quarter for 64-58 win over Wildcats

Coming off its biggest win of the year with an upset of No. 6 University of St. Thomas, the St. Catherine University basketball team hoped to end the semester with a non-conference win to keep its streak alive. Unfortunately, the Wildcats came up a little short as the University of Northwestern-St. Paul used a fourth-quater run to pull awayt for a 64-58 decision Saturday in Roseville, Minnesota.

After a strong shooting day against the Tommies a week ago, the Wildcats struggled from the field against the Eagles shooting just 34.4 percent from the field while allowing the Eagles to shoot 41.2 percent. The Wildcats dominated the boards with a 42-34 rebound advantage and poured in 24 points in the paint and 12 on second-chance opportunities. In the end, the Wildcats' missed shots proved to be the difference.

In the opening quarter, the two teams exchanged leads four times with the Wildcats holding a three-point advantage after 10 minutes of play. The second quarter saw several more lead changes with the Wildcats up by as many as five before finding themselves down 24-23 at the half.

With 1:59 remaining in the third quarter, the Wildcats took a 36-30 lead before allowing the Eagles to close it out with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 36-36. That was the last time the Wildcats would see a lead or the score tied as the Eagles jumped out to a lead early in the fourth quarter and never looked back en route to victory.

Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) led the Wildcats with 14 points shooting 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. The sophomore also added five rebounds, a team-high four assists and two steals.

LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn./Humboldt) posted a double-double finishing with 12 points and 11 boards including nine on the offensive end. Kennedy Jennings (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) also had a solid performance with 10 points and a game-high three blocks. This was Jennings' fourth game this season with three or more blocks.

Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Meg Clark (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) each scored eight points, while Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) added nine rebounds and three assists. This was also Lee's fourth game this season season with three or more assists.

Regan Cooper and Jessica Cole each tallied 15 points to lead the Eagles while Courtney Cunard scored 12 to contribute to the team's win.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 7-3 overall. They will take a break until the new year when they are slated to return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against Saint Mary's University Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Butler Center
