Box Score After narrowly escaping defeat Friday night against Augsburg College thanks to two power play goals in the second period, the St. Catherine University hockey knew it would have to be at its best to come away with the sweep. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were forced to settle for a split as the Auggies rebounded to hand the Wildcats a 5-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) loss Saturday afternoon at the Ed Saugestad Arena in Minneapolis.
"Our inexperience really showed tonight," said Head Coach
Brad Marshall. "As an individual player, college hockey is a tough sport. If you don't like to compete and work hard every shift, you will be exposed. That's what happened tonight. Our players got caught up watching instead of competing."
Despite a taking 29 shots on Auggie goalie Brianna Schulz, the Wildcats couldn't slow down the Auggie attack on goalie
Alex Hall (Burnsville, Minn.). All-MIAC selection Rachel Hennessy helped fuel the Auggie offense with two goals including one on the power play.
The Auggies got on the board first near the end of the opening period when Kayla Fuechtmann scored her second goal of the series on a set up from Callen Naasz.
The Wildcats repsonded quickly, though, when
Bailey Rasmussen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) recorded her third goal of the weekend on a pass from
Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.). The two connected three times in two games, all on power play opportunities to finish the weekend with three points a piece.
After heading into the break with a 1-1 tie, the Auggies came out strong in the second and added two goals early and then collected another in the third before sealing the win with an empty net score. The Auggies handed the Wildcats' their first MIAC loss of the season.
The Wildcats will take a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday before taking on Saint Mary's University in a two game series starting Friday, Dec. 6. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Drake Arena.
