The St. Catherine University tennis team opened up competition at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional, Friday, with a couple of wins on the singles side and a doubles-pair that went undefeated on the first day in St. Peter, Minn.
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and
Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) won two matches on the day to advance to the winners bracket in doubles competition. The pair took down Gretchen Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson of Gustavus by a score of 8-4 to beign the day. The duo then went on to defeat St. Norbert's Nancy Chybowski and Maria Slusarek 8-6 in their second match of the day.
On the singles side, 2012 MIAC All-Conference pick
Michaela Burroughs (Waterloo, Neb.) had a big day as she went undefeated in both her matches and will live on to play Saturday. Burroughs first took down Slusarek 6-1, 6-3, before taking down Gustavus' Maddie Lundstrom 6-0, 6-1.
Mackenzie Weber (Benson, Minn.) also picked up a win for the Wildcats, defeating Gabby Queenan of Macalester 6-2, 6-2, to advance in the consolation round.
The USTA/ITA Women's Division III Regional Championships at Gustavus features 23 of the top schools in the region.
The Small College (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) singles and doubles champions from the USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, held October 11-14 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
The second day of competition will begin on Saturday with singles competition at 9 a.m. at Gustavus.
