Hockey Finishes on a High Note With 6-0 Shutout of St. Ben's

Mel Gerten
After a convincing 6-2 win Friday night in St. Joseph, the Wildcats, and the seniors who raised the program to new levels of success, were hungry for more. They closed out the season in style with a 6-0 shutout win at Inver Grove Heights.

Playing in her final game as a Wildcat, senior team captain Mel Gerten was flawless in goal. She came up with a number of great saves in the second and third periods, and fittingly ended her stellar career with St. Kate's fourth shutout of the season. All told, Gerten stopped 20 St. Benedict's shots on goal. She leaves the net as the leader in nearly every statistical goalkeeping category in St. Kate's history.

Fellow senior captains Meghan Lange and Michaela Michaelson also ended in fine form. Lange scored two goals and added two assists on the day. Bringing her season total to 23 points (6 goals, 17assists).

Michaelson continued her outstanding play over the last few weeks of the season. She picked up one goal and two assists in the final appearance of her incredible career. The reigning MIAC Player-of-the-Year, Michaelson finishes the season 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists), raising her career total to 112 points in 98 games. Michaelson's 13 goals in conference play once again lead the league.

Not to be left out of the impromptu senior celebration, Jessica Feltes opened the scoring in the third period. Feltes rebounded up her own shot and slipped it past the Blazers goalie into the back of the net. It was Feltes fourth goal of the season, the highest single season total in her four years at St. Kate's.

The only special teams scoring on the night came from sophomore Ashley Tilton. Kayla Clafton picked up one of her two assists in the game on Tilton's power play goal.

SCU won 31 of 50 face-offs in the game, with Michaelson winning 11 of 13 and Kelsey Abrahamson winning 8 of 10.

With the win the Wildcats finish the season with a record of 11-10-3 overall, and 8-7-3 in MIAC action. The Wildcats 19 points in conference play left them one point out of the final MIAC playoff spot.
