Cassie Rooney picked up a goal in all three periods as the Wildcats skated to a 7-3 win over Robert Morris College.
Cassie wasted no time in getting the first third of her hat trick. Rooney put the Wildcats up 1-0 just 2:41 into the game through a combination of great hustle and skill. Rooney fired a shot from the top of the end zone face-off circle, she then hustled past the defender to pick up her own rebound and put a beautiful backhand into the upper right corner of the net.
Robert Morris tied the score a little over ten minutes later, but less than a minute after that
Cassie Vennemann put the Wildcats up for good. Following a similar script to Rooney's opening goal, she picked up the puck after
Bridget Braastad's shot went wide, and beat the goalie to close out the first period scoring.
A wild second period saw three goals scored in one minute, two more within 40 seconds of each other, and a momentum swinging short-handed goal with less than 20 seconds to go in the period. The good news for St. Kate's was they notched four of those six goals.
Rooney scored at the 7:35 mark with an assist from
Jessica Feltes to make it 3-1 St. Kate's.
Thirty-five seconds later
Rachael Gasperetti put SCU up 4-1 with an assist from
Nicki Mosbeck.
Twenty-five seconds after that RMC scored to make it 4-2.
After five more minutes ticked off the clock, Feltes scored with an assist from
Meghan Lange to make it 5-2.
RMC answered again, this time just thirty-seven seconds later, to make it 5-3.
As the second period was coming to a close SCU found themselves down a skater and facing the possibility of heading into intermission with only a one goal lead. That is when
Kelsey Abrahamson changed the momentum of the game for good. Abrahamson stole the puck from behind the Eagles net and circled around to the other side and beat the goalie for a short-handed goal with just 17 seconds left in the period. That gave the Wildcats a three goal cushion heading into the final twenty minutes of play.
In the third period, Rooney found the back of the net one more time to pick up her hat trick.
Michaela Michaelson and Abrahamson assisted on the goal.
The Wildcats return to conference action next weekend as they host St. Olaf College on Jan 21st at 7 pm.
