Track continues strong season at Manitou Classic
The St. Kate's track and field team competed at the Manitou Classic in Northfield and came home with another solid collection of top place finishers.
Greta Sieve was the Wildcats lone winner on the afternoon. Sieve was making her 3000 meter steeplechase season debut and lowered her St. Kate's school record by almost a second with her 11:32.20 clocking. Sieve, who led start to finish, was 16 seconds ahead of the next finisher.
Freshman Samantha Levercom finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.37. Senior Kristie Bronson also finished second in the 3k with a new outdoor personal best time of 11:37.26.
In the field events Samantha Larson placed second in the javelin with a throw of 31.79 meters (104-3). Larson also finished fourth in the shot put with a new outdoor personal best of 11.52 meters (37-9). Celestine Ventura also picked up a third-place finish for the Wildcats with a mark of 42.26 meters (138-8) in the hammer throw.
Other notable performances for the Wildcats included:
- a pair of personal bests in the 400 meter dash for twin sisters Kim (59.55) and Kayla (59.74) Engel.
- New personal bests in the 800 meter run for Heidi Sande (2:22.32) and Amanda Manship (2:22.35).
- The Wildcats 4 x 800 meter relay of Sande, Manship, Marci Burg and Bridget Perkins grabbed podium honors with their third-place finish.
Also turning in season or personal bests on the afternoon were
- Melissa Elverud in the 200 (29.03) and the 400 (64.83)
- Rachel Doherty in the 100 (14.48) and the 200(29.14)
- Amber Powers in the 200 (31.28)
- Burg in the 800 (2:32.57)
- the 4 x 100 team of Levercom, Katie Lawler, Doherty, and Jennifer Ampe
- the 4 x 400 team of Sydney Malanaphy, Kim Engel, Kayla Engel and Sarah Meissner (4:02.65),
- Rebecca Zenefski in the javelin throw
- Mary Beth Kowitz in the long jump and
- Ashley Whiting in the triple jump.
The Wildcats compete again on Friday April 24 at the Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Open held in Des Moines Iowa.
