Strong second-half not enough in Wildcats loss to No. 14 Augsburg

Katie Benjamin put up a career-high 20 points in the loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite sophomore Katie Benjamin tallying a career-high 20-points, the St. Catherine basketball team came up just short to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe, No. 14 Augsburg University, 62-57 at Butler Center on Tuesday evening. After getting behind early in the conference game, St. Catherine went on to outscore the Auggies 31-23 in the second half. 

Senior Danica Cambrice had her first double-double of the season recording 15 points and dominating the glass with 11 boards. Cambrice was three for three from the free-throw line and forced the Auggies to three turnovers. Benjamin was 8 for 11 and shot 75-percent from the free-throw line. The second-year starter also contributed four-defensive rebounds against the skilled Augsburg offense. 

St. Catherine opened the game with a 6-0 run over the undefeated Auggies built as much as a 15-point cushion - 27-12 - finishing out the first 10 minutes. In the second quarter, the Wildcats posted 14-points led by senior Jackie Radford with six points. Radford finished the game with an 8 points total with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. 

After the half, St. Catherine was able to cut the deficit to 9 scoring a game-high 17-points. Late in the third quarter, the Auggies held a demanding 18-point lead before St. Kate's went on an 8-0 run and finished the quarter with Cambrice going 3 for 3 from the line. 

Two minutes in the final quarter, first-year Cierra Ahlf started St. Catherine's 9-point run. With 6:18 to play in the game and trailing by nine, sophomore Mackenzie Kurczek sank a three-pointer getting the score within six. Benjamin was able to get it to four with a layup in the paint, followed by a layup from Radford and the Wildcats were down by just two. Augsburg sank back to back three-pointers at 2:09 on the clock but Benjamin and Cambrice rallied back one more time with a three-pointer and two-point field goal, respectively. Their late-game efforts weren't enough however with Augsburg scoring one final time for the final score of 62-57. 

The next two games on the schedule are both road contests as they head to Winona to face Saint Mary's on December 4 and then to Northfield on December 9 at St. Olaf. St. Catherine returns to St. Paul on December 11 when Bethel comes to the Butler Center
