Overview
The Athletic Training Room(ATR) can be used by any student-athlete at the College of St. Catherine. The purpose of the ATR is to work with the student-athletes in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The ATR is open before and after all athletic practices and home events. Appointments can also be made to see an Athletic Trainer in the ATR. A Certified Athletic Trainer covers all athletic practices and home events either in person, or on an on-call basis.

Abby is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training and Health Education. She received a Master of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in School Health Education. While at UW – La Crosse she was a Graduate Assistant in the Health Education/Health Promotion department.
Abby teaches EXSS 375: Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries in the Exercise and Sports Science Department at the College of St. Catherine.

Abby is a certified athletic trainer who is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all nine intercollegiate sport teams at St. Kates. She can be found on the sidelines of all home Wildcat athletic events. Go Wildcats!
 

Sports Medicine Fellows (2007-2008)
We have four family medicine physicians that are taking part in the Hennepin County Medical Center family medicine sports medicine fellowship program.

Heather Edwards, MD
Dr. Edwards completed her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Utah. She is currently completing her subspecialty training in the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center. Dr. Edwards lives in the twin cities with her two-year old daughter, Autumn, who accompanies her on many lovely bicycle rides. She is particularly interested in cycling and endurance athletics, as well as overuse injuries, obesity prevention, and medical issues pertaining to the female athlete.


Michelle Gorman McNerney, MD
Dr. Gorman McNerney recently completed her Family Medicine Residency at University of Minnesota/Methodist Hospital. She is currently completing her subspecialty training in the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Gorman McNerney lives in South Minneapolis with her husband, Jason and enjoys taking advantage of the Minneapolis trail system and lakes. She is also a lifetime Minnesotan and therefore travels to a cabin "up north" regularly to fish and water-ski. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.

Saul McBroom, MD
Dr. McBroom grew up in several small towns in rural Minnesota. He went to St. John’s University, where he played basketball for four years. Saul volunteered for one year as an AmeriCorp VISTA before completing medical School at the University of Minnesota. He recently finished a family medicine residency program at North Memorial and is now one of the current Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellows at Hennepin County Medical Center, a one-year subspecialty-training program. Dr. McBroom is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and American Association of Family Medicine. Dr. McBroom enjoys most sports and outdoor activities in addition to spending time with his wife and daughter. His sports medicine interests are varied, but include diabetes and exercise, football and mass event coverage.

Ben Nelson, MD
Dr. Nelson is originally from Forest Lake, MN. He attended the University of MN-Duluth for his undergraduate education and graduated from the U of MN Medical School in 2004. He recently completed his residency in Family Medicine at North Memorial Medical Center in Minneapolis. Dr. Nelson is now one of the current Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellows at Hennepin County Medical Center. When away from the hospital and clinic, Dr. Nelson enjoys fishing, cross-country skiing, and camping with his wife, Rachel.
